Santiago de Chile, Dec 28 (Prensa Latina) The trial of seven former military for the murder of Chilean singer Victor Jara is a blow to impunity and will open an intense legal debate, a lawyer said today.
In statements to Prensa Latina, the prosecuting attorney in the case, Nelson Caucoto, who represents the victim´s family, said the challenge is to get the sentence, but he said he was aware of the obstacles ahead.
"There is enough evidence for them to be convicted" said the lawyer, who on behalf of Jara´s family expressed satisfaction because they managed to uncover the whole truth of the facts and those responsible are prosecuted after nearly forty years.
Caucoto said the arrest warrant issued on Friday is a transcendental step, after an investigation he described as very complex, as they investigated events of over 38 years.
The Court of Appeals of Santiago Judge, Miguel Vazquez, charged seven former military for being perpetrators and accomplices in the murder of the singer, who died five days after the coup of September 11, 1973, led by General Augusto Pinochet.
The defendants as perpetrators are Hugo Sanchez and Pedro Barrientos, while Roberto Souper, Raul Jofre, Edwin Dimter Bianchi, Nelson Hasse Mazzei and Luis Bethke Wulf are accomplices.
